Gwalior Academy of Mathematical Sciences (GAMS) was launched on 11 December 1993 at Jiwaji University Gwalior and opened its membership in January 1994. Professor V. P. Saxena, Former Vice-Chancellor of Jiwaji University, Gwalior; the founder president along with researchers and faculty members of Gwalior region played a vital role in the establishment of GAMS with the twin objectives of inculcating interest in mathematics amongst the scholars of Gwalior region and promoting teaching and research activities in mathematical sciences. Since then it has been endeavoring towards the upliftment of mathematics by publishing news bulletins, research journals and organizing annual conferences, workshops, and seminars in interdisciplinary areas. Annual conventions of the Society have been held at various NIT's, Universities and other reputed engineering colleges in different parts of the country. GAMS has become a highly reputed society attracting large research communities not only from India but also abroad. The society has gone a long way in promoting interdisciplinary research in sciences & engineering.
The first annual conference of the Academy was held at School of Mathematics and Allied Sciences (SOMAAS), Jiwaji University, Gwalior on 17 September 1995. Professor H. C. Khare, Ex-President of Indian Mathematical Society inaugurated the conference. In the conference, an award lecture was instituted in the memory of two of the most renowned teachers of mathematics of Gwalior region-Professor S. K. D. Gaur and Professor G. C. Sharma of Agra University.
The Academy co-sponsored the Fourth International Conference on Physiological Fluid Dynamics. It was held at Jiwaji University during December 1995 in which more than hundred delegates from all over the world participated. The proceedings of this conference have been published by Narosa, New Delhi under the title 'Advances in Physiological Fluid Dynamics'. The cultural program held at this conference reflected the rich cultural heritage of the region through a ballet `Mrignayani'.
The second annual conference of the academy was held at Govt. Girls P. G. College, Morar (Gwalior) on 15 September 1996. The conference was inaugurated by Professor P. K. Jain from Delhi University who also delivered the second S. K. D. Gaur memorial lecture. Eminent scientist Professor A. P. Yoganathan Atlanta (U. S. A) and Professor M. Saleem, Bundelkhand University were other distinguished speakers.
A three-week instructional conference on "Mathematical Modelling in Ecology and Medicine" was held at SOMMAS, Jiwaji University, Gwalior from March 28 to April 17, 1997, under the auspices of GAMS and Department of Science &Technology, New Delhi. Professor H. P. Dixit, Vice-Chancellor, Bhoj Open University, Bhopal inaugurated the conference. Besides local resource persons, several distinguished speakers including Professor J. B. Shukla, Professor G. C. Sharma, Professor R. D. Agrawal, Professor B. Rai, Professor A. K. Govila, Dr. B. R. Shrivastava, Professor Manju Pandey, and Dr.K. R. Pardasani addressed the conference. The deliberations covered modeling in Ecology, Population Dynamics, Mathematical Epidemiology, Stochastic Modelling, Modelling in Blood Flow, Ophthalmology and Burns and Cold Injuries in Skin and Subcutaneous Tissues, to name a few. The program also included training in Computer Programming through C-language.
The valedictory function held on 16 April 1997 was graced by the auspicious presence of renowned mathematician Professor J. N. Kapur, as chief guest and Professor K. K. Tiwari, former Vice-Chancellor, as special guest. Professor R. R. Das, Vice-Chancellor, Jiwaji University presided over the function.
